 Alaria esculenta
This beautiful brown seaweed can grow up to 3 metres in length and has a sturdy midrib to protect it from the lashing Atlantic waves. Alaria has a distinctive aroma, not unlike tea and due to its pleasantly mild and salty flavour, it can be used in many dishes, both sweet and savoury. This seaweed is rich in iodine which is health-promoting for the thyroid and therefore, pure goodness for our metabolism.

Did you know that Alaria contains 3 times as much magnesium as the superfood Kale?
Chewy, with a mild bite to it.
Alaria is a very versatile seaweed, simply chop it into stir-fries, porridge, smoothies or salads and it will add texture, flavour and nutrition to any meal. Its delicate fronds make for a tasty snack while the midrib offers a chewy bite. Alaria is great for preparing an Asian Style Salad which you can find on our recipe page. Using seaweeds that are rich in iodine is best done in small doses regularly; adding a teaspoon of chopped Alaria to any dish is a good way to start using it.
